Changing Stories, Changing Lives

In the first six weeks of 2015, Gateway Furniture helped 82 local households with 251 items of furniture, 24 white goods and 40 starter packs consisting of necessary smaller items such as: pots; pans; bedding; towels; crockery and cutlery.
We were also able to make some special requests this year.
One such request was from a man who needed items that were very specific, due to his disabilities. The gentleman’s right arm had been affected by a stroke, he had a full prosthetic leg on his left side, and his right functioning leg muscle, he said, was so weak that he was unable to lift himself out of his bed or armchair.
He needed a riser armchair, a riser/recliner single bed and a rowing machine to help him build up his leg muscle. We weren’t sure how long it would take to source the items, but remarkably, in just a week we were able to supply all of them to him.
Another recent special request was from a lady who had come to us through Womens Aid. She had just moved into a new property with her son who has special needs. She spent £50 on a sofa at a local charity shop and then came to us, saying that was all she had… and the clothes she was standing in. The lady was referred for a double bed, a single bed, a chest of drawers and a wardrobe, but we were able to go above and beyond this by also providing her and her son with a TV unit, a wall display unit, a DVD rack, a table with 4 chairs, a storage cupboard and a starter pack. She said, “I was completely overwhelmed by the service and friendliness of the staff”.
At Gateway Furniture, we want people to know that hope for a more stable future is not lost. What we hope ourselves is that our clients who arrive with one story, leave with an entirely new one… and a fresh start.
